7-Year-Old Starves While Attending School Online in Effen Hungry

Las Vegas, NV (November 1, 2021).  Less than two years ago marks the start of the COVID-19 pandemic that forced schools to close and virtual classrooms to open across the country.  Effen Hungry helps us to realize the real impact of COVID for our youth and their families in this light-hearted, short film written and directed by Dion and Carla Lee.   This film project was a family collaboration starring their 7-year-old son, Colby Lee, and Cameraman, 18-year-old Jaylen Lee.

The story follows Colby, whose mother was hospitalized with COVID and father who was also unemployed as a result.  Colby does his daily routine, attends class, and goes through the day with no food in the house.  You will laugh and be entertained by this little guy's energy.  You will also experience the sadness and pain that affects children all over the country as a result of the virus.  Effen Hungry brings awareness to challenges that face the homeschooled population.

The tone hits home as many students are still at home with limited resources, although schools have opened up.  Some are home alone, babysitting siblings and fending for themselves while parents work.  Other families remain without employment and struggle to put food on the table.  For many children, school meals are the only meals that they have all day.

As a virtual Educator for third grade, Carla Lee has experienced first hand some of these disparities with her own students.  She was inspired to write this story after reading an article about a third grader who was struggling to pay attention in her online class. When asked by her teacher to explain, she burst into tears stating that she was hungry.  "The story touched my heart so much, my husband, Dion suggested that we make a movie about it, " Carla explains.
